Cory's Shearwater. Pardela Cenicienta.

Corys ShearwaterThe Cory's shearwater spends most of its life at sea, skimming the waves as it searches for food, but builds its nest in caves in cliff faces. The young are left in the nest during the day, and the adults return to feed them at night. The calls of the adults are quiet eerie, epecially when they are heard in dark surroundings.

The young birds are left on their own for a period before they finally leave the nest and the species is adversely affected by light pollution as the natural instinct of the young is to head for the reflection of the moon on water, but they are deceived by the brighter lights of near by towns and this results in deaths due to things such as collisions with traffic.

The young birds are also at risk from poachers who take them for their food value, and the Guardia Civil recently arrested two people in the south of the island who had a dozen young birds in their possesion.
